Polish Novel

The novel was written by Stefan Żeromski at a time when the Polish state was being formed after the partitions. The main character, Cezary Baryka, is initially an enthusiast of the revolution in Russia, he takes part in the Bolshevik revolution, then escapes from Russia to Warsaw, but already changed by the events he experienced and convinced of the brutality of social change. He starts his studies in the capital, but interrupts them and participates in the Polish-Bolshevik war. Then he visits Nawłoć, where he experiences his first love. Finally, he returns to Warsaw, where he takes up a job. Through the fate of young Baryka, we learn about the political and social history of reborn Poland. Together with him, we observe various Polish communities and the development of their political views.
